About This Book

The Story

Most businesses claim they want innovation. Most people do not consistently do this. They have a plan. They possess scorecards. They often get new ideas. What they lack is an operating system that is a reliable means of uncovering authentic opportunities, testing them with evidence, and scaling them without the organisation's immune system attacking them on arrival. The AIF is an operating system of sorts. AIF draws upon years of consulting experience in diverse sectors like manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and industrials. As such, it offers a leadership team a comprehensive and pragmatic architecture for implementing innovation as a discipline. It is not a department, not a program, nor merely a poster on the wall. This guidebook carries you through the whole system: its five layers, seven flow stages, four capability domains, and an intelligence layer, which tells you whether the engine is running or stalled. Each concept has a tool to work with. All investigations are supported by evidence. Concrete application of the system throughout the book is illustrated with a worked example that provides a coherent view of the application of the system across all twelve steps. There is also a worked example that runs from the first page to the last of the book on a manufacturer who sensed his real opportunity was to sell uptime, not parts. There is also a description of modifications that were made to the system, experiments that tested it, pivots that reshaped it, and scale-ups that made it real.

No hype. No magic. Just a system that runs and gets better every time it turns.

Start with one opportunity. One team. Ninety days. The loop teaches by running.

About the Author

Dr. Abhijeett Desai

Dr. Abhijeett Desai

Dr. Abhijeett Desai holds multiple positions, all of which are tied to the core work of innovation and leadership. He is both an innovation architect responsible for building innovation systems, a Principal Innovation Consultant in charge of innovation affairs, and a Leadership Coach who provides growth guidance for enterprise managers. Beyond these roles, he has personally developed a complete set of innovative tools: the Adaptive Innovation Framework (AIF). He has worked in related fields for more than 30 years. Over these years, he has successively engaged in three completely distinct yet mutually supportive fields: the first is the automotive industry, the second is business consulting, where he devises strategies for enterprises, and the third is leadership development, where he helps managers enhance their ability to lead teams. Leveraging this cross-domain accumulation, he can always use a systematic, step-by-step innovation approach to help various organisations facing difficulties sort out the challenges they hold and ultimately transform them into high-quality, long-term sustainable business outcomes. His initial professional foundation was as an automotive engineer who graduated from VJTI Mumbai. After leaving school, he never stopped learning and successfully completed many advanced professional courses. The institutions he has studied at include IIM Kolkata and WHRB, and he also systematically studied content related to Design Thinking. Later, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Innovation Management from the University of Thames, Paris. He has formulated many frameworks for innovation, such as ISTI, PAIN-BPAR, Adaptive Nexus Framework, HEART, and Adaptive Innovation Framework (AIF). He considers that innovation starts with changing our point of view. He consciously substitutes the term "problem" with "challenge", as he feels that a challenge holds an opportunity for creating something valuable through deliberate actions. “A problem narrows your thinking; a challenge broadens it. And when you think about challenges with a focus on outcomes, innovation becomes a systematic process of solution making.” – Dr. Abhijeett Desai
